Holly Hunter was born on 20 March 1958 in Conyers, Georgia. She is the daughter of Charles Edwin Hunter, a farmer and, Opal Marguerite, a house-wife. She started playing the piano when she was just nine years old. She studied drama from the Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh and graduated in 1980. She then moved on to New York where she shared room with a group of people including fellow actress Frances McDormand, director Sam Raimi, and future collaborators Jeon and Ethan Coen. Here, she met Playwright Beth Henley by chance, when both of them were trapped in a stalled elevator, which resulted in her being cast in a his play. She had a relationship with an actor -Arliss Howard for many years but she married a Polish Cinematographer-Janusz Kaminski whom she married in 1995 and divorced in 2001. Since then she has been in relationship with an American actor Gordon McDonald and the couple has twin sons. She gave birth to her twin children at the age of 47 is still active in her acting profession.

She started her career in acting after she met Beth Henley; she acted in his plays ‘Crimes of The Heart’ and ‘The Miss Firecracker Contest’. She made her first big screen appearance in a horror movie named ‘The Burning’ (1982), and then she acted in a supporting role for ‘Swing Shift’ (1984). She collaborated with the team of brothers Ethan Coen and Joel Coen who was writing- directing and producing ‘Blood Simple’ and she also lend her voice for the film as an answering machine recorded message. She got her first starring role of “Edwina” in Coen’s ‘Raising Arizona’ (1987). She gained stardom from ‘Broadcast News‘ (1987), in which she played “Jane Craig“. She has played for the screen adaptation of ‘Miss Firecracker’ and ‘Always‘ in 1989. In 1993 she won her Best Actress Oscar for ‘The Piano‘, in which she used her real life piano skills. She also acted in the much appreciated movie, ‘The Firm’ in the same year. She has acted in a comedy-drama ‘Home For The Holidays’ as well as in a thriller ‘Copycat‘ in 1995. Two of her films ‘Crash‘ (1996) and ‘A Life Less Ordinary’ (1997) were surrounded with controversies but despite that she was noticed for her roles. She also earned positive reviews for her role of a recently divorced “Judith Moore” in ‘Living Out Loud’ (1998) in which she starred along with Danny DeVito, Queen Latifah and Martin Donovan. She then played a small role of “Mira” in ‘Jesus’ Son’ (1999). She did 3 documentaries from 2000-2003 which are- ‘Down From The Mountain‘, ‘Searching for Debra Winger’ and ‘Rock That Uke’. Then came ‘Thirteen‘ (2003). She starred in ‘Little Black Book‘ (2004), ‘Nine lives’ (2005) and ‘The Big White’ (2005). She is an Executive Producer as well as in the main role of ‘Saving Grace‘ which was premiered in July 2007.

She has won the Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe Awards for Best Actress for ‘The Piano’ (1991). She was nominated thrice for Oscar Awards for ‘Broadcast News’ (1987), for ‘The Firm’ (1993) and for ‘Thirteen‘ (2003). She was also nominated twice for BAFTA Awards for ‘The Firm’ (1993) and for ‘Thirteen‘ (2003). She was also nominated in Golden Globe Awards for ‘Thirteen‘. She had nominations in Emmy Awards & in Screen Actors Guild Awards for ‘Saving Grace’ (2007). She received a Star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame on 30 May 2008.
